Hi friends,
Sorry for the radio silence last week — I was on a surprise trip to Malibu, a full course of Pfizer pumping through my system, ready to turn my brain off from the dreary New York weather we’ve been having. This is now the second time in a few short weeks that I’ve skipped a newsletter after nearly a year of consistent sends. And as I carve time out of my Sunday today to sit down and write you all, I realized I don’t have a roadmap on how to do this in a vaccinated world.
I started All In The Cards in the time where I needed it most — all my friends had left New York, I was in an unfulfilling relationship, and my creative output was at an all-time low. All I had was time and no outlet to put it to good use. So this newsletter was born, tenderly scooping up those free weekend hours otherwise occupied by boozy brunches and birthday parties and giving them renewed purpose. Writing this newsletter took the place of reading for my friends IRL in hazy bars and candlelit living rooms. I clung to that purpose, that portal to occupied time.
And now it’s changing. As more of my friends are vaccinated, my social calendar starts to fill up again. I’m returning to the original programming of those Saturday-or-Sunday nights I repurposed for this newsletter and, in my excitement, have let this priority slip from my schedule. In some ways, I suppose it’s burnout — writing two or three thousand words every week isn’t not a lot of work. But it’s mostly just feeling caught between the safe haven I built myself during COVID and the potential of the after-times. In short, I need to rejigger my schedule.
None of this is to say I’m abandoning this newsletter; quite the opposite actually (new things are coming!). But I wanted to apologize because I know this send is important to a lot of you, and to explain myself. And maybe most of all, let you know you’re not alone if you feel like you don’t know how to move forward from the last year. It feels like it’s all happening at once, even though we’ve been waiting on this moment every day for a year.
We’ve never done this before. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. That’s what I’m telling myself, anyway.
